Rakstā analizēts vārda šlāgeris ( Schlager) jēdzieniskais saturs, kas atspoguļojas Rīgas vācu laikraksta Rigasche Rundschau publikācijās 1919.–1939. gadā. Šis vārds, īpaši vācu preses leksikā, parādījās dažādos kontekstos. Visbiežāk tas bija izteiksmes līdzeklis vai reklāmas sauklis uzmanības pievēršanai. Paralēli nostabilizējās izpratne par šlāgermūziku šī jēdziena plašākā nozīmē: starpkaru periodā to raksturoja operešu mūzikas stilistika un modes deju ritmi, piemēram, dažādi fokstrota un tango paveidi.
Strauji attīstoties tādiem medijiem kā radio un kino, arī mūzikas industrijas mērķtiecīga darbība ļāva šlāgermūzikai izplatīties plašā
auditorijā. 20. gs. 20. gados preses reklāmās par šlāgeriem sauca ne tikai operešu mūziku un populārās dejas, bet arī mēmā kino filmas. Vēlāk, 30. gados, mūzikas industrijas ietekmē presē veidojās arī priekšstats par šlāgeri kā dziesmu no kinofilmas.
